Now Hear This: Matt Nathanson

Awesome, my article is up. Newest one will be up soon.

Now Hear This: Matt Nathanson

If you can't access the Link, here's the whole article.

The American Pie movies are the “Fast Times at Ridgemont High” for our generation. The song at the end of “American Pie: Band Camp” brings us to the pick of the week. “Laid,” which sums up all the American Pie movies, is a fun, catchy song, but it is the singer’s album “Underneath the Fireworks” that really caught my attention.

Matt Nathanson was an Artist on the Rise by VH1, and has received good reviews from Billboard magazine. He began his music career in 1993 with the release of “Please” and has been on the College/Coffee House circuit ever since.

He has just begun receiving national recognition with his latest record. The first single from it, “Come On Get Higher,” peaked at 63 on the Billboard Hot 100 and is the 20th video on the Top 20 on VH1. He was also on Jimmy Kimmel Live along with Eli Stone and Men in Trees.

His music is classified as Folk Rock, and is built on a 12-string guitar and catchy lyrics. His 2003 album “Underneath the Fireworks” has hits like “Angel” and “Curve of the Earth” that set the tone for the whole CD, epitomizing what most of his albums are about: rejection, loss and love. His lyrics can be harsh at times, but at others, they can be quite sensual.

His website declares “Some Mad Hope” to be “a song cycle of sorts that chronicles the search for a genuine connection, touching on the sensually electric moments as well as the darker frustrations of sifting through the wreckage -- in hopes of finding redemption at the end of the day.” To me the album is like watching a relationship from start to finish, each song documenting the love and loss in the relationship.

There is hardly a place in music where you don’t find the themes of love, loss, redemption. Matt Nathanson provides a story in each of his albums, showing the true human emotions. No matter the mood, Matt Nathanson is a good choice, because he is what I call good music. I give him 4 stars out of 5.

"The stars so bright"

Totally redid my blog and finally, thank goodness, changed up my favorite songs of the week!

I've decided that I'm ready for all of this to be over and I want to go to NYC and I want my own record company or something. I want to be involved in music. So I think writing for the Rolling Stone might be pretty freakin awesome! I really don't know what I want to do, just because I have a major doesn't mean I know what I want to do. haha. All I know is that I need to make some mix cds for my Aunt, as that is her Christmas Present. I always want to call them Mix Tapes, I always have to correct myself haha!

I've also decided to redo my blog so I have more about music like cds coming out and the like. Just adding to it, it is needing more substance. I'm also doing Playlist of the week like "Best Movie Anthems" or "Songs You Were Possibly Conceived to". Stuff like that, because its only funny to have that type of playlist for Valentines Day.

This is Day One, with Finals Playlist, songs to Jam and chillax too.

1. Shut Us Down- Lindsay Buckingham
2. String Quartet in C Sharp- Michael Kamen (Instrumental to relax sore brain cells)
3. Black Star- Eliza Lumely (Very Jazzy)
4. Main Street- Gene Kelly (Reminds me of Home)
5. Here Comes the Sun- The Beatles
6. Let It Be- The Beatles (My favorite Song...ever)
7. Entire Pride and Prejudice Album
8. Entire Band of Brothers Album
9. Speed of Sound- Chris Brown
10. Moonlight Serenade- Glenn Miller

Here you go, music to get you through.

"The choirs of NYPD still singin Galway Bay" Playlist for Dec. 1

I awoke this morning to my hair standing straight up. I'm not even kidding, I was a sight to behold. I wish that I could wake up and my hair be like every other woman in the movies hair; just perfect and in place, carefully disheveled. Today was an exciting day, as well every day you wake up breathing. Its just a bit more exciting because I have a performance with my Middle Eastern Dance class at the Salsbury Theater! Uber exciting day... I'm kinda nervous, but I think that is just hunger more than nerves. haha. I've also decided that I think I want to make a record company and name it, Now Hear This Records. But really I have no idea. I think it would be cool, but anyway, lets get back to the music,

Now Hear This: Smooth Mraz

Here is the new article :D Yay! Hope that everyone keeps there butts off the ice and there feet on the ground. Personally, I'm tired of feeling like Humpty Dumpty...

Now Hear This: Smooth Mraz

Here is it if you can't get through the link.

Jason Mraz first came onto the music scene in July 2004 with his hit song, “The Remedy (I Won’t Worry),” which hit number two on the Billboard charts. His new single, “I’m Yours” and his new album, “We Sing, We Dance, We Steal Things,” has hit No. 3 in the U.S. album charts. U.S. Adult charts places his new single at No. 1, while Billboard places it in ninth place.
He has been on a few movie soundtracks like “50 First Dates,” “New York Minute” and the television show “Everwood.” His sound is quite unique. Like Maroon 5, his sound changes from song to song and album to album. He has a light and airy sound that sounds summery and emits feel-good vibes. His first hit with “Remedy” was a summer favorite during 2004, providing a musical refuge.
His newest single, “I’m Yours,” has a Caribbean feel to it; it can be used as a part of a summer montage scene, with beaches, margaritas and the epitome of summer: the beach bonfire. The acoustic guitar and Mraz’s voice blends together like good strawberry lemonade. “I’m Yours” has a beach-themed music video that was filmed in Hawaii. All in all, it is a song that gives off summer ambience.

No amount of summer feel-good vibes could starve off the lyrics of his first single “Remedy.” Despite the happy-go-lucky background music, the lyrics are about his dying childhood friend. The sad news changed his whole outlook on life, leading to the creation of this hit song.

Summer-sounding artists are great during the summer, but in the throes of bitter winter cold and ice-covered sidewalks and roadways, they are even better. The sounds of summer invoke the feel of the sun on bare skin and sweet breeze that flutters in; all of these senses go back to feel of summer and can put you in a better mood. Other great summer artists include Kenny Chesney, Pink and many others. Winter is no reason not to feel like a rockstar or to have good tunes like those by Jason Mraz. I give him 4 out of 5 stars.

Now Hear This: Dylan Nov. 2-8

Obama was elected president today and it is an unbelievable day in history. It is just amazing. Obama's speech was fantastic and just in awe.

This is a brand new day. John McCain's speech was amazing too. It was a long and hard race and both parties tried hard, but, we're not here for politics, we are here for music and... Now Hear This: Dylan is now up.

Now Hear This: Bob Dylan

If you can't get to it at that link, here's the article in full.

Bob Dylan is the one name that evokes the image of New York sound, the musty, smoky bar in Greenwich Village. He was notorious for playing secret shows in the village in the 1960s and ‘70s. He still does shows, and his most recent album, released in 2006, is called Modern Times, which I highly recommend alongside his other CDs.

He was not the first to talk about politics in music, nor will he be the last. One of my favorite songs is “The Times They Are A-Changin’.” While it was written in the 1960s, the song is just as relevant now as it was then. The political climate and chaos of the ‘60s is all embedded in his music. The strumming of his guitar and the flow of his gravelly voice provides a song that is both irresistible and memorable. While iTunes says that his music is of the Rock genre, I think that he is label-less, which can make organizing his music a bit difficult. He can be Folk, Rock, and Country Rock all on one album.

One song that should be on a Road Trip album is “Subterranean Homesick Blues,” which, to me, just screams Jack Kerouac. While they are of two different crafts—Kerouac as a Beatnik poet and Dylan as a Rock singer—they can and do blend together, like a good French Roast and a dash of cream and sugar.

Coffee references aside, his music states something that everyone heading into elections knows: “The line it is drawn/The curse it is cast…/The order is rapidly fadin’./And the first one now/Will later be last/For the times they are a-changin’.” No matter your party, good music is good music, and Dylan is definitely good music.

DJ M’s Playlist of the Week:
1. Gates of Eden- Bob Dylan
2. Corrina, Corrina- Bob Dylan
3. Radio Nowhere- Bruce Springsteen
4. Strawberry Fields Forever- The Beatles
5. Gotta Fight for Your Right to Party- Beastie Boys

Now Hear This: Ani DiFranco Article Oct. 26- Nov.1

Article is up for last week and the newest article should be up here shortly.

Now Hear This: Ani DiFranco

Or if you can't get to it by that link, here's the whole article.

Ani DiFranco has the beauty of a model, but she’s actually a folk singer with an attitude. This is a hard-hitting girl who is not afraid to say what she thinks and feels. Ani is being hailed as “one of the greatest acoustic guitarists since Bob Dylan” and her live album, “Live at Babeville” is said to be “one of the best live acts since the Grateful Dead.”

She has been producing music for the last 18 years and has been featured in many movies, such as “My Best Friend’s Wedding,” and hit shows like “Nip/Tuck.” While her music is her business, her other duties include being a mother to Petah Lucia, born on Jan. 20 of last year. She takes her daughter with her when she tours, and has been quoted as saying, “my daughter is growing up on the road.” Her feministic views and new status as a mother are all reflected in her new album “Red Letter Year,” which is going to be released on Sept. 30.

Her voice has a nice tone to it, no hard-hitting electric guitars. Instead, she has her lyrics and acoustic guitar. The music is not all folksy songs like Grateful Dead; there are songs like “Emancipated Minor” that pick up the beat into a jazz setting, like Arethra Franklin in “Chain of Fools.” “Red Letter Year” sounds like The Blues Brothers meeting The Grateful Dead with a sprinkle of Miles Davis and pinch of Bruce Springsteen. DiFranco’s sound is unique in the folk music scene and hopefully paves a way for new musicians who want to travel in her footsteps.

While I really like her new CD, I give it 3 out of 5 stars. She has a wonderful sound that is rich and full and brings life to an old music scene.

DJ M’s Playlist for the Week:

1. Star Matter-Ani DiFranco
2. Like a Stone-Audioslave
3. Congratulations-Blue October
4. Take Me Away-Plain White T’s
5. I Will Follow You into the Dark-Death Cab For Cutie

Playlist October 27 2008 "I can touch a symphony of sound"

So yesterday was Jakes birthday and on Saturday it was Aaron's wedding and Father Tom came into town on Saturday as well. So this weekend was relaxing, yet, it wasn't, but, thats fine, it was fun and I have no problem being tired, besides I've got coffee to hold me over. :D It's also a good day because, I'm no longer deathly ill like I was last week, I realized, I should stop being a pain about going to the doctor. Enough chatter, what we are really here for is the music!

so...

Now Hear This: Band of Horses

Now hear this column is up and ready to read :D

Now Hear This: Hot Band Formerly Known as Horses

If You can't get to it to that link, here's the whole article.

Mix Slash’s guitar skills with some Grateful Dead, then add a pinch of My Morning Jacket. Blend well with The Bravery and put it in the oven at 350 degrees for 30 minutes. Serve it hot, and you get the music from Band of Horses. This band combines a nice sound of drums and guitars with a good even tone from the lead singer.

Their music, despite the description above, sounds woodsy, yet influenced by the grunge rock scene. The song “Our Swords” is a good one to put on when cleaning the house, doing the dishes or even just putting on music just to listen. It has a great tempo and an easy fluid beat, creating a song that you can sway to (not recommended while driving).

The band’s name was originally just Horses. Picture it: July 13, 2006, the Late Show with David Letterman. A new band with a different sound from the Northwest appears on screens everywhere. The song that started was “The Funeral,” which was on the band’s first album and ended up on the One Tree Hill: Road Mix soundtrack. The strumming guitar and the singer-songwriter-feel of the beginning leads into a powerful ballad. The band recorded their first album and subsequent albums in North Carolina, all because of one fateful night with David Letterman.

Their first album, Everything All the Time, was released on March 21, 2006 and peaked at Billboards’ Independent Album charts at 31. Keeping to the form of more indie rock than pop rock, they released their second album, Cease to Begin, on Oct. 9. This album flew to No. 1 on the Billboard Independent Album charts. Both of these albums are available on iTunes, other music sources on the Internet, or even old-school record stores. The band’s music has been featured on One Tree Hill, Nick and Norah’s Infinite Playlist, and Gossip Girl.

If you’d like to hear more of this band and others that rock, check out Marissa’s radio show on KSUA 91.5 on Monday mornings at 8-10 a.m. If you want to see what has been played in past shows, check out her blog, http://nowhearthis915.blogspot.com/

Right before I got on air, I never I digress, today was cold, much like every other day, given that its Alaska, but, again I digress; my Brother (Zack Bowman, of the Bears Football Team) ran a touchdown back and the interception that won the game! So here, big brother, the shout out that I couldn't give you this morning, because you weren't listening as you don't have the website to do so and because, I didnt' have a voice this morning. Now Hear This Column for Oct 14

New Column is up!!

Now Hear This: Ryan Adams

If You can't get there through that link, here's the full article.

yan Adams has been in numerous bands including: Blank Label, The Patty Duke Syndrome and Whiskeytown to name a few, before he made a solo career with the album, Heartbreaker.

He has made other albums that include “Rock n Roll” and the latest “Cardiology” which was set to be released October 28, 2008. Although the first single “Fix It” was released Sept. 23 of this year.

In 2001 Adams won, “Best Male Rock Vocal” as well as “Best Rock Album.” Although he didn’t win, he was also nominated the same year for the “Best Male Country Vocal” for his version of Hank Williams’ song “Love Sick Blues”.

Ryan Adams is one of my favorite singers; his bluesy, yet alternative country sound is reminiscent of Bob Dylan. Both have amazing voices that are gravelly and beautiful, Adams’ voice is showcased in the ballad, “Hotel Chelsea Nights.”

Besides the rocking guitar riffs and powerful ballads that Adams and Dylan both sing, they are also both long time residents of New York City; The Big Apple is ever present in their music.

Adams definitely has a New York sound to his music. You can almost picture the smoky bar in Greenwich Village; Adams on stage with an acoustic guitar, a drink, getting ready to give the crowd an impromptu concert.

While that scene constantly resounds in Ryan Adams’ songs and albums, he is also great to listen to in the car on late drives, escially my favorite song, “Come Pick Me Up”.

Adams has been featured in movies like “Elizabethtown” and in popular TV shows like “One Tree Hill.” I give Ryan Adams 4 stars out of 5.

If you’d like to hear more of this artist and other bands that rock check out Now Hear This on KSUA Mondays from 8-10am and Marissa Davis’ blog at http://nowhearthis915.blogspot.com/ for more about all things music.

"Just The Girl I've Been Looking For"

In light of yesterday's post, I've had a change in mood. I'm just now, revived. I'm a new woman. I'm so happy and just full of energy its just nuts! So, I've decided since I posted my down in the dumps playlist, I'll post a high octane energy one. Just one that is fun filled and just jam to. Whether it be in car or in your room or ( I promise I won't say a word) the shower, where you have the vocal range of Mariah Carey.

After yesterday's breakdown, I've just become the happy DJ M that I am usually. I finally accepted things for what they were and the best part, I got an 8.5/10 on my article! I was worrying for nothing!! I knew things would be fine, I just need to have more faith, but as per usual I ramble on when important things need to said like :

the Quote of the Day- "With a great bra and pair of shoes and kick ass shade of red lipstick a woman could take over the world"

Playlist for today's Mood includes:

  1. Stacy's Mom- Fountains of Wayne (everyone knows this one)
  2. Beautiful Soul- Jesse McCartney (I'm not ashamed that I like him, after a day like yesterday everyone needs a song that tells them how beautiful they really are)
  3. Teenage Wasteland- The Who (Who seriously doesn't love that opening? One of the best!)
  4. Unbelievable- EMF
  5. Anyway You Want It- Journey
  6. Hands In the Air- Flo Rida
  7. Raspberry Beret- Prince
  8. When the Sun Goes Down- Kenny Chesney ft Uncle Cracker
  9. Twist and Shout- The Beatles
  10. I'm a Bitch- Meredith Brooks
  11. Walk This Way- Run DMC ft Areosmith
  12. Spice Up Your Life- Spice Girls (I love them and who can't resist this song? I mean even top tapping, its an instant upper)
  13. 3 Small Words- Josie and the Pussycats (I love this movie, its fun and its great to just dance around to. Great beat, perfect to act like a rock star too)
  14. Ride Wit Me- Nelly
  15. Lady Marmalade- Missy Elliot, Lil Kim, Pink, Christina Agulaira, Maya
  16. Ray of Light- Madonna
  17. Girl at the Rock Show- Blink-182
  18. TubTumping- Chumbawumba
  19. Hunk of Burning Love- Elvis (Try your best Elvis impersation. Go ahead... it'll be our secret)
  20. You Can't Stop the Beat- Hairspray Cast
So go put the list and bust it out like you own the place. Dance around and belt it out like your Whitney Houston pre Bobby Brown into a spoon, hairbrush or whatever is in your hand! Nothing is more freeing than pretending your rock star.

"Don't ask any question and don't try to understand"

Today is a blah day, just lay around and do nothing day. Sounds great right? Wrong. I feel guilty for something, I really don't know what, ok I know what it is about. I feel guilt because someone came to me asking for help and I just said no. While I've said no before, its the first time I've said no to him and it is bugging me deeply. I just can't get it outta my head and he hasn't contacted me and I feel guilty and sad because of that. I know, that its not my fault that he did the things he did, but I feel responsible for him. I know, that I should, but I do and I know I can't help someone who doesn't want it, but, damn it, it is just irritating. Its also bugging me, wheater or not I'm suppose to do my major. I know that I want to write, but, I don't know what I'm meant to do. Your probably wondering what this has to do with music, well, it has to do with having a playlist for your moods.

I've learned that having a playlist for your moods can help you deal with life in general. Good moods and bad.

My Playlist for today mood: Blah Apathy with a dash of self-hate, Generous helping of guilt and a bit chunk of what am suppose to do with my life- itis and a hint of worry.

  1. What I've Done- Linkin Park
  2. No More Sorrow- Linkin Park
  3. Ordinary People- John Legend
  4. Never too Late- Three Days Grace
  5. It'll All Work Out- Tom Petty
  6. Basket Case- Green Day
  7. He Lays in the Reins- Iron and Wine with Calexico
  8. Coffee and Cigarettes- Michelle Featherstone
  9. With or Without You- U2
  10. I Believe- Blessed Union Souls
  11. Meant to Live- Switchfoot
  12. Dare You To Move- Switchfoot
  13. Undeniable- Mat Kearney
  14. Hurt- Johnny Cash
  15. Here's to the Night- Eve 6
  16. Sweet and Low- Augustana
  17. Here I Stand- Madina Lake
  18. Far Away- Nickelback
  19. Time of Your Life- Green Day (this one had to be on there)
  20. Macy's Day Parade- Green Day
These songs are now, making me feel much better. I'll be in a better mood, after I take my nap, lack of sleep can really get to you.

Good Night and Good Luck
Love,

Me

Nick and Norah Infinite Playlist Review and my Epiphany

My review of Nick and Norah Inifinte Playlist (movie and soundtrack) has hit stands as of NOON today. So everyone that can get one, grab one, if not, I'll put up the link, when it is made available :D Now to take a nap, because I'm exhausted and I have a midnight deadline for a story that hasn't happened yet. WHOO go Journalism! haha, but in other news. I had an eye opening class in my American Sign Language class.

We had a guest speaker and she is deaf, but wears cochlear implants and is like me, she can live in the hearing world and in the deaf world. It was so awesome to listen to someon who struggled like I did with learning how to hear and using my hearing and use it. She said and explained all the things that I was feeling and how I felt and everything. I was so cool to see, that I wasn't the only one who felt like that. Guilty because I could hear while others couldn't and guilty because I couldn't hear and was feigning the ability to exisit in a world that would label me as disabled, when I didn't believe I was. I got her email and so I'll be emailing her alot about being deaf in a hearing world and the like. I think I suprised her when she was going through and asking people if they were hearing and I said i was hard of hearing and we signed for a minute back and forth.

This whole experience was just wonderful. It showed me how free I really am. I fit in everywhere, even when it seems like I fit nowhere. Anyways, I've got a ton of homework to do. So thats my rant for today.

Much Love. Me

Here are the Reviews for both the CD and Movie:

“Nick and Norah’s Infinite Playlist” is a great album. I bought it hoping that it would be good and I was blown away by how great it really was. It has a great indie
sound to it. If the soundtracks from “Juno” and “One Tree Hill” had a baby, this is what it would sound like.
It’s an album that you get sucked into with toe-tapping beats and an infectious ability to make you do so.
The song “Middle Management” by Bishop
Allen is the song from the trailer for the movie and would be a great addition to any running or workout playlist. That’s not the only song that can appease listeners.
The song “Nick and Norah’s Theme Song” by Marks Mothersbaugh is also a catchy tune that can delight even the most hard rocker. It is a fanciful and wonderfully
synchronized tune. While techno heads might love it, it can appease anyone looking
for a great instrumental to lay out and ponder about life to.
This album is a great one and I give it a 4.5 out of 5 stars.
DJ M’s Playlist of the Week:
1.Middle Mangement- Bishop Allen
2.Nick and Norah’s Theme- Marks Mothersbaugh
3.Riot Radio- The Dead 60s
4.Our Swords- Band of Horses
5.Screw That Man- The Jerk-Offs
6.How To Say Goodbye- Paul Tiernan

The Movie:
I went to see “Nick and Norah’s Infinite Playlist” expecting something to see something
amazing and I got an amazing view of the world of New York City. There were parts of the film that were a bit reminiscent
of Juno, which also starred Michael Cera, but other than that, it was a great movie.
The plot circles around Nick, a member of the band the Jerk-Offs, who has recently
been dumped. When his ex shows up to one of his shows, he turns to a stranger, Norah, and asks her to be his girlfriend for five minutes, which sets them on a citywide
adventure.
The music of the film stayed true to the indie rock vibe, which was what the director
and writers were aiming for and it also provide sentimental moments like when Norah asks Nick if he’s sad because he’s missing the concert. He replies, “I’m not missing it, this is it.”
It was a great movie that is good for anyone
to go see. While there is adult humor there is something there for those who are there for the music, for the romance and some who are there just for the love of getting
lost in a great movie.
There were parts that were a bit disgusting,
but all in all it was a wonderful movie.
I give it 5 out of 5 stars

Nick and Norah's Infinite Playlist

This movie looks promising. I really want to see it and so in spirit I got the soundtrack and oh my gosh! I'm so loving it.

It really is a great album, yes I say album, but anywho. It really is great, its like if Juno's Soundtrack and One Tree Hill's Soundtracks had a twins named Nick and Norah. I'm really liking the song Middle Management by Bishop Allen. Its really catchy and without knowing it you just get sucked into it and just start tapping along.

This album is defiantly a album to stick in the car and play when on a road trip to Anchorage or, you know, where ever.

I give it a 5 stars outta 5

he band Muse has been used as a muse in the writing of the popular series “Twilight” by Stephenie Meyer and their music has been used in movies like “Swordfish” and video games like “Guitar Hero.”

Muse started out as a small band from Teignmouth, England and while the British were not too keen on them, stating they sounded too much like Radiohead—the United States were more than willing to sign them—starting the band’s pathway into modern pop culture and radio sets everywhere.

Their sound cannot be labeled because it changes with every album. Their songs can range from hard-hitting rock to soft harmonious lyrics that create a scene in your head.

The song “Butterflies and Hurricanes” has a beautiful orchestra that lends itself to the self-empowering lyrics

that float like a butterfly and hit like a hurricane. All of their albums are rumored to have hidden messages in them.

One thing that is present are the musical tastes they are inspired by, like Italian and yet they also have a hint of Depeche Mode and a small tasting of Jimi Hendrix. In the album “Absolution,” the band also makes major use of distorted bass lines to add a heavier, more intense feel to their riffs.

While “Absolution” in my opinion is Muse’s best album, their other studio albums like “Black Holes and Revelations,” “Showbiz” and “Origin of Symmetry” all are great albums that are great at creating pictures and stories in the listener’s head. With the band’s natural talent and ever-changing sound, I give them a 4.5 out of 5 stars.
