"Show Me How Pretty the World Is" Playlist Feb. 23 2009

I have a theory that music can heal anything, I mean not in a medical sense, but in a mental sense. One song can make or break a morning, one song can change an entire mood so why not have it affect us in way that lets a grieve and mourn, yet rejoice in someone's life. Dustin, you will be missed and to those who knew him and miss him, we can take refuge in the music. There is nothing I say, or any song I can play that will say the right words, to show my sorrow. I won't say anything, like "everything happens for a reason", because, I'd hate myself for saying it. The best I can do is dedicate this show for you, so: This show is for you, Dustin, and for your family and friends, because this is the only thing I can do for you.

"I could've danced all night" Playlist February 16 2009

I learned a few things this weekend: 1) don't wear stiletos the size of your pinkie fingernail, you'll regret it later, no matter how cute you looked. 2) Do not, whatever you whine to your Aunt that you hate studying Spanish because she will start typing in Spanish and make you do the same, forcing you to actually use your vocabulary. All I have to say is thanks Auntie, you probably are the reason I'm not going to epic fail this Spanish test. :D Oh by the way, Happy belated Valentines Day!

Now Hear This: Sky Dwellers

Another week, another article! Wooo Hoo!

Now Hear This: Sky Dwellers

For those who can't access the link, here's the article:

Now Hear This: Sky Dwellers

Picture it: a small cabin filled with drums, guitars and one huge speaker; on the bed is a computer with all the band’s recording equipment except a power cord. The band? The Sky Dwellers—their name comes from what the Alaska Natives called the Aurora Borealis. They have been together since October of last year, although they didn’t consider themselves a band until Jace, the drummer, joined. There is a sincere camaraderie amongst them, and it definitely shows on stage.

Their music comes from a place that is genuine. Their sincere love for the music shines through, especially in “Breathe Part 1,” also known as “Kade’s Epic,” which happens to be Kade’s favorite song. All the band members have a favorite: Andrew’s is “Goner,” while Jace’s is “When the Whiskey Hit Me.”

One of the best parts about the band is that there is not just one lyricist. The whole band writes—to each his own notebook and to each his own song. That’s one of the greatest things about The Sky Dwellers: they are influenced by each other and themselves. As their Myspace says, “A general collaberation (sic) of the artistic endevors (sic) of five young individuals with something one may call ‘musical talent.’” Each band member is influenced by different music, from Sublime to Grateful Dead, Bob Dylan to the Foo Fighters.

Their diverse tastes show in their music. They are a rock group according to my definition, but they classify themselves as a psychedelic band. Whatever their classification, they are great. My favorite songs of theirs are “Breathe Part 1” and “Apostrophe.” Both of those songs really made me tap my feet; I could feel the drums echoing through the floor, and the guitar solos were just amazing. It is great running music to get pumped up to or just something to put on in general when a rock and roll mood hits.

Their songs present a story, have a beginning, middle and end. They leave you wanting more, in a good way. My previous article was centered on death, but I want to focus more on how music can be used to celebrate life. Each song has its own story to relate to the listener. “Breathe Part 1” gave me the ability to breathe. I felt happier after listening to it.

They don’t see themselves playing at Red Rocks in Colorado or at Madison Square Garden. Jace said they should aim low, but I disagree. I can see them playing there and in many other venues. They’re all about playing anywhere they can get a gig and are going to play again Feb. 20. Other gigs are posted on their website: www.skydwellers.net along with information about the band members: Jace, Joe, Kory, Andrew and Kade. All in all, I give them 4 and a half stars out of 5.

Rating: 4.5/5 stars

Now Hear This: Billie Holiday

First I'd like to express my sincere condolences to the friends and family of Lauren Lecomte. I'm sorry for your loss.

On that sad note, the link for the new article is below. It is dedicated my Grandfather and this column more than any other means a lot to me. So here it is.

Now Hear This Billie Holiday

For those who can't open up the link here is the article.

Now Hear This: Billie Holiday

I dedicate this column to my Grandpa Ray, who died this last week. He introduced this artist to me through old CDs and I have been in love ever since.

Billie Holiday was and still is the “Queen of Song.” She was who Diana Ross portrayed in “Lady Sings the Blues.” Holiday’s past was turbulent at best. Her mother was 13 when she got pregnant with Billie and was thrown out of her house. Holiday was also placed under arrest while she lay dying in the hospital.

Despite Holiday’s private life, her voice was a force to be reckoned with. There was a depth and raw emotion in her voice that can’t be redone. Her music has been in many movies, most recently in “The Notebook.”

“I’ll Be Seeing You” was Allie and Noah’s song. This song means a lot to me; it was the last thing I said to my Grandpa before he died. The song is beautiful in its own right as a love song.

This was the song that first got me into Billie Holiday. My Grandpa and I were listening to jazz, and her CD “Billie Holiday for Lovers” cued on the CD player. I was enthralled. There was such beauty in her voice, and I could really feel the music. The drama and the emotions from the song drew me in.

“I’ll Be Seeing You” isn’t the only one of her songs that I love. Another of my favorites is “Can’t Take That Away From Me,” which has been covered by everyone from Frank Sinatra to George Liberace. It’s a fun, jazzy song that makes me want kick up my heels and dance the foxtrot, even though I butcher the foxtrot like no other.

The jazz in the background is just as beautiful as Billie Holiday’s voice. There is a way the two blend that make a triple shot latte with Irish Cream seem ugly in comparison. The sax wailing in the background mixing with the gravelly voice of Holiday creates music you can almost see. It creates the yearning that is the calling card of jazz.

Jazz is an acquired taste—some people like it, some love it, and some hate it. It has a melancholy beauty. Despite the yearning, there is a great love in the music. Jazz isn’t all sadness and blues, it’s also happy and full of love.

Billie Holiday sings with such emotion that there is no denying that she is anything but genuine when she sings, as I would to my Grandpa Ray, “I’ll be seeing you in the morning sun/ and when the night is new I’ll be looking at the moon/ but I’ll be seeing you.”

"I'll be seeing you"Playlist Feb. 2 2009

I'm finally back to work. Its been awhile since I was in the studio and it feels so nice. The first article is Billie Holiday and it is dedicated my Grandpa who died while right before school started. While I'll miss him, its good that he passed because he's not in pain anymore.

But here in the land of the living the Super Bowl was yesterday and was that not a hellva game?! I was rootin for the Cardinals to win, but the Steelers and that amazing pass and runback. I had to get up and pace. My blood pressure was up and I was freakin out. It was awesome. Man did The BOSS kick some serious butt or what! It was great me and my Mom were singin along and jammin out. It was a beautiful day.

but, without further ado heres....
