Now Hear This: Matt Nathanson

Awesome, my article is up. Newest one will be up soon.

Now Hear This: Matt Nathanson

If you can't access the Link, here's the whole article.

The American Pie movies are the “Fast Times at Ridgemont High” for our generation. The song at the end of “American Pie: Band Camp” brings us to the pick of the week. “Laid,” which sums up all the American Pie movies, is a fun, catchy song, but it is the singer’s album “Underneath the Fireworks” that really caught my attention.

Matt Nathanson was an Artist on the Rise by VH1, and has received good reviews from Billboard magazine. He began his music career in 1993 with the release of “Please” and has been on the College/Coffee House circuit ever since.

He has just begun receiving national recognition with his latest record. The first single from it, “Come On Get Higher,” peaked at 63 on the Billboard Hot 100 and is the 20th video on the Top 20 on VH1. He was also on Jimmy Kimmel Live along with Eli Stone and Men in Trees.

His music is classified as Folk Rock, and is built on a 12-string guitar and catchy lyrics. His 2003 album “Underneath the Fireworks” has hits like “Angel” and “Curve of the Earth” that set the tone for the whole CD, epitomizing what most of his albums are about: rejection, loss and love. His lyrics can be harsh at times, but at others, they can be quite sensual.

His website declares “Some Mad Hope” to be “a song cycle of sorts that chronicles the search for a genuine connection, touching on the sensually electric moments as well as the darker frustrations of sifting through the wreckage -- in hopes of finding redemption at the end of the day.” To me the album is like watching a relationship from start to finish, each song documenting the love and loss in the relationship.

There is hardly a place in music where you don’t find the themes of love, loss, redemption. Matt Nathanson provides a story in each of his albums, showing the true human emotions. No matter the mood, Matt Nathanson is a good choice, because he is what I call good music. I give him 4 stars out of 5.
